Tracking the Moon: Understanding Your Energy Through Lunar Transits

We live in a world that prioritizes productivity over presence and achievement over alignment. But if you’ve ever woken up feeling inexplicably foggy, unmotivated, or deeply introspective—and then judged yourself for not “doing enough”—I invite you to turn your gaze skyward.
The Moon, in astrology, is our emotional body. It governs our internal rhythms, unconscious patterns, and habitual responses. Just as the Moon controls the tides of the ocean, it also tugs at the emotional tides within us. We are, after all, made mostly of water.
Understanding your own Moon placement in your natal chart (the zodiac sign and house it was in when you were born) offers a deeply personal blueprint for how you process feelings, seek comfort, and nurture yourself. But there’s another layer that often gets overlooked: where the Moon is right now—what astrologers call the current lunar transit—and how it interacts with your unique chart.
The Moon Moves Fast—And So Do Our Moods
The Moon changes signs roughly every two and a half days, cycling through all twelve zodiac signs in just under a month. This fast movement creates a shifting emotional climate that impacts all of us collectively, but it also affects you individually, based on which house of your chart the Moon is transiting through at any given time.
Each of the twelve astrological houses corresponds to a different area of life—career, relationships, health, dreams. And when the Moon moves through these houses, it highlights and activates those areas in a deeply felt, often subconscious way.
For Example: The 12th House Fog
Let’s say the Moon is transiting your 12th house. This is the house of dreams, the subconscious and spiritual retreat. It’s deeply internal and mysterious. When the Moon moves here, you might feel low-energy, emotional, sleepy, or introspective. You may crave solitude and find the external world overstimulating. And that’s not “lazy”—that’s lunar.
Instead of fighting that energy, what would it be like to honor it? To give yourself permission to rest, to journal, to meditate, to sleep a little more, and to work a little less? When we understand the Moon's journey through our chart, we stop making ourselves wrong for feeling the way we feel.
Tracking Your Lunar Rhythms
One of the most supportive astrology practices I recommend to my clients is moon tracking. It’s simple, intuitive, and deeply affirming.
Here’s how you can start:
Know Your Chart: Use a free astrology tool (I like Astro.com) to pull up your natal chart. You’ll need your birth time, which determines how the houses are laid out for you.
Follow the Moon: On any given day, check which sign and house the Moon is transiting in your chart. Apps like TimePassages can help.
Feel It Out: Notice how your energy, emotions, and needs shift as the Moon moves. Keep a journal. Are you more outgoing when the Moon is in your 5th house of self-expression? Do you feel more driven and structured in your 10th house of career?
Plan Accordingly: Use the Moon as a guide for what to prioritize. The 6th house Moon might be great for organizing your space or caring for your body. The 11th? Perfect for collaboration and community.
Why This Matters
We are not machines. We are cyclical beings, deeply intertwined with nature, rhythm, and spirit. When you attune to the Moon’s flow—when you give yourself permission to rest during a 12th house transit, to express during a 5th house one, to connect deeply in the 8th—you return to yourself. You reclaim your rhythm.
Astrology, when used consciously, isn’t about prediction—it’s about presence. The Moon teaches us to ebb and flow, to feel, to heal. When you track it, you stop resisting yourself. And that, truly, is a radical act of self-love.
